A festival of expression of love, care and protection for brothers and sisters, Rakshabandhan, is celebrated in India. Tying a Rakhi is the key ritual in this festival. Sisters tie Rakhi on their brother’s wrist normally on the right wrist.

As time passed Rakhi has undergone many changes. Now it is not the normal Rakhi made of thread. Now the thread has changed or even it has many variations. The thread can be of silver, gold or made of different materials. The thread that is used in the Rakhi festival has soft and attractive and skillfully designed. Now a day Rakhi is made of soft cloth, shimmering beads, stones, zari, rudraksh, small toys, small pearls etc. Mostly in the Rakhi thread we find zardosi work, resham dhaga work. We also find floral thread Rakhi, beaded Rakhi, sandalwood Rakhi, satin ribbon Rakhi etc.

Rakhi thread is decorated with pearls, rudraksh, swastika, om or even with small images of god. Rakhi thread is skillfully made with resham, a plastic thread, silver zari or golden zari. Threads are made keeping in mind comfort, beauty, vividness, attraction or even a message. Rakhi thread is also selected keeping in mind age and choice. For kids they are more in color and size and with toys. For the elders they are simple, thin, comfortable and small in size.
