   earlier Gujarat was called as lata desh or latta desh up to 12th century the rulers of lata desh were rashtrakutas and they are kannadigas Patel word derived from patti pattila patela now Patel .in Karnataka large number of people use surname as patels.after the gurjars came to latta desh and conqured it and called it as gujarath.several places in gujarath are kannada name for example . dandi means near to ocean malegov mountain region baradapalli became baroda likewise.hence patels are kannadigas upto 12th century the language of the gujarath was kannada. now they are speaking gujarathi.
